There are two common ways to sand floors: a drum sander and a floor polisher, often called an orbital machine or a buffer. Drum sanders are powerful tools
designed for serious, deep sanding. Orbital floor polishers or buffers sand the floor with a lighter touch, which is ideal for refinishing older floors that have been sanded numerous
times or for scuffing up the surface of old floor finish to apply a freshen-up coat. The base of an orbital floor polishing machine spins quickly, and the weight of the machine does most of the work.
1
Place the sandpaper or sanding screen on the floor. If there are smooth and rough sides of the sandpaper, place the rough side toward the floor. In most cases, ordinary sandpaper is not used with an orbital machine. Mesh sandpaper, called sanding screen is more common. Sanding screen is often rough on both sides, which allows you to flip the screen over when one side dulls to get more use from it.
2
Lay the sanding pad on top of the sanding screen, if your machine requires a pad. Check with the manufacturer or the shop where you rented the machine to
learn whether it requires a pad. Some machines have a pad or short-nap brush built into the bottom, which cushions the screen without an additional pad.
3
Grab the floor polisher’s handles and tilt the machine back on its wheels. Some smaller machines do not have wheels. If yours doesn’t, lift the machine off the
floor by grabbing it at the base. Never lift a floor polisher off the floor by its handle unless it is a very light weight machine and the manufacturer instructs you to do so.
4
Set the base of the machine directly on top of the sandpaper and pad. The weight of the machine keeps the sandpaper in place; there is no need for
adhesives or fasteners. The edges of the base should align with the sandpaper and pad, so adjust the position of the machine as necessary.
Things You Will Need
§ Sandpaper or sanding screen
§ Sanding screen pad
Tip
§ You can polish a finished floor with the same machine by using a buffing pad instead of sandpaper.
Warnings
§ Ordinary sandpaper tears too easily to use with a floor polisher. Only use sandpaper or sanding screen that is designed for your machine.
§ Do not turn on the machine without a sandpaper or sanding screen under the base. The bare base of the machine could scar the floor.
